The 2012 Rapsani is a blend of 34% Xinomavro, 33% Krasato and 33% Stavroto, aged for 12 months in a 50/50 mixture of French and American oak (first-, second- and third-year year in equal amounts). Dougos’ structure is always interesting–these are wines that, at a modest price, show off their power and end with crisp finishes. The tannins are a bit aggressive, but even now they do not overwhelm the wine completely and 75 minutes of air brings it around. The more elegant mid-palate should keep up, but the price of admission here is the fruit flavor, clearly. This is far more exuberant than I recall in past vintages at a similar age. The fruit is fresh, a touch flamboyant and even a bit Beaujolais-esqe, quite perfumed on the nose and intense in the bottle. Overall, this does seem to be another fine bargain, tightly-wound and penetrating, but quite tasty, too. There were moments when the fruity nuances were almost a bit too much. It will be interesting to see if this is as compelling in a decade, but in its youth, it should win a lot of fans. Give it a year to settle down and dive in, but it is approachable now.
