The 2011 Ramos Pinto has a lifted bouquet of black cherries, creme de cassis and licorice that is intense but does not quite have the delineation of some of its peers at the moment. The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannins, a fine line of acidity and perhaps more pedigree than the aromatics. There is splendid weight here and an engaging harmonious finish with a sprinkle of white pepper and a little clove. Affording several minutes with this sample, the nose gains clarity with aeration, so I might be inclined to give this decanting before pouring. Tasted May 2013.

Named one of the “Top 2011 Vintage Ports” – Shows an essence of raspberry and wild plum, bursting with loads of fresh acidity. Very fresh and juicy, offering shadings of graphite that extend on the finish. A refined and elegant style that lingers with plenty of juiciness. Best from 2020 through 2050.

The scent has the complexity of a flower garden allowed to go wild, along with bold strokes of fruit richness that continue straight into tannins layered in schist and iron. Plump and juicy in the middle, savory and gripping in the end, this wine glows with flavor intensity. It’s hard to resist enjoying it now, bit it should be remarkable 20 or 30 years from now.

Crisp and emphasizing acidity, this shows fine fruit… I was pretty sure this was one of the best Ramos Pintos I’ve had (not that I’ve had them all). It’s tight, it’s austere and it needs time… this will be a classic Port that will grow old with you. Despite the initial impression of refined tannins, it became more and more powerful as I played with this for several days, finishing dry and austere, with tightly focused precision and all that acidity. Drink 2036-2065.

This delicately perfumed wine opens to reveal power combined with elegance. The wine has great ripeness and a soft texture on the surface masking the severe tannins at the center.
